The new streaming service, DC Universe, ordered an orginal series; a live-action Titans and subsequently, Doom Patrol. Because these shows are proprietary, they do not adhere to the schedule of a typical broadcast season…which means is it was a VERY busy summer here at Encore.

As of this moment, Titans just finished their first season and Doom Patrol is deep in development. With characters like Beast-boy and Elasti-girl my department is faced with technical challenge that are are upping our game.

Titans & Doom Patrol

Beast Boy - Elasti-Girl

The amount of VFX work for these shows is astounding. We've got Beast Boy transforming into animals and Elasti-girl is a nightmare in more ways than one. The deadlines are tighter and the complexity is extreme. I hope the fans appreciate the technical marvels. I spent a great deal of effort working with my team to get the best out of them in the short time we had.

I sincerely wish I could show wireframe transformations without the visual distraction of lighting, animation, and compositing...but unfortunately that's not likely to happen. The best I can do is highlight aired material.

Beast Boy

Transformation VFX

I didn't just "rig" Beast Boy, I also created the rig system that enables him to seamless transformation into any animal form. So far, Beast Boy has only morphed into a tiger. I was able to rig the tiger body, but due to production demands I assigned the completion of the character to Andrei Orehov who did an incredible job rigging the face, skinning, and bringing in the pseudo-muscle deformations.

Rita Farr

Blob VFX

If you're unfamiliar with the Doom Patrol character Rita Farr, she has the mutant disability of being a gelatinous ball of human flesh. Through great effort, she can mold herself into any shape, any size, and regrow any number of limbs. So far I've rigged her to roll through the city as a thirty-foot blob, smother a person under her blubbery mass, and grow arms out of a slug-like state while trying to regain human form.
